For five years the @rt Outsiders Festival has been focusing on the relationship
between contemporary art and new technologies; this year it forms part of the "Nuit
Blanche" festival. In this edition, Henry Chapier and Jean-Luc Soret throw new
light on artworks that have been doomed to obscurity.
To offer artists faced with censorship maximum visibility, the Festival takes centre
stage with a symbolic work by Marcel-Li Antunez Roca in the Vitrine (the streetside
display window) at the MEP. |
|

A founder member of la Fura
dels Baus, Marcel.Li Antunez Roca worked with this company as artistic coordinator,
musician and performer from 1979 to 1989. At present he is involved with DEDALUS,
a major spatial art project. Acutely aware of the problems encountered by artists
around the world in terms of creative freedom, he has produced an installation which
reminds visitors how important it is to defend the freedom to create art independently. |
|

At the forefront of the struggle for artistic freedom, this piece takes the form
of a visual and interactive dialogue. The faces of visitors are captured in real
time, absorbed into the work and integrated into a baroque, fantasmagorical visual
environment projected inside the exhibition space. The computer-processed images
put their subjects in dangerous fictional situations, involving them in a series
of tableaux that are parables of all the various forms of censorship. Like
the mythical figure of Tantalus, the viewer/actor endlessly repeats the same actions,
never achieving his or her goal.
During the Nuit Blanche festival on 2 October, this installation will be operational
in the streetside window display at 82 rue François Miron until 5 am. |

Public discussion: As well as presenting Marcel-Li Antunez Roca's work, @rt Outsiders
assesses the limits imposed on artists throughout the world according to their chosen
medium of expression. |
